Qur'anic verses - The Crucifixion ... reality or illusion:

The end of the life of Jesus on earth is as much involved in mystery as his birth, and indeed the greater part of his private life. The Orthodox Christians believe that his life was taken on the Cross, that he died and was buried, was ressurected, walked about, ate with his disciples, and taken up bodily to heaven. This explanation is necessary for the theological doctrine of blood sacrifice and vicarious atonement for sins, which is rejected by Islam. But some of the early Christians did not believe that Christ was killed on the Cross. St. Barnabas and the Basilidians believed that someone else was substituted for him. While, the Docetae, another early Christian sect, held that Christ's body was either a phantasm or of real but celestial substance, and his sufferings only apparent. These differences reflect the Christians' imperfection of knowledge but no fault of their own. The Crucifixion has been the subject of endless controversy. But when Muhammad received the revelations from God after 610 AD, facts had emerged in support of St. Barnabas and the early Basilidian Christians that Jesus was not crucified.

According to the Qur'an, Jesus rose to God. The implication of this is: Jesus either rose to God and did not die, or he did die and his body remained honoured and not crucified. However, those who attempted to kill Jesus Christ, the Prophet of God, were guilty intentionally even if, according to some early Christians, a substitute was crucified.
